International ServiceThe International Service Avenue comprises all the things that a Rotarian can do to advance international understanding, goodwill, and peace by getting acquainted with people of other countries, their cultures, customs, accomplishments, aspirations, problems - through personal contacts, attendance at conventions, through reading and correspondence, and through cooperation in all club activities and projects, including those of the Rotary International Foundation, that will help people in other lands. International Service takes on a number of different forms, but at the heart is the awareness that Rotary is truly an international organization, and that the community of Rotarians is worldwide in scope. International Service Projects are designed to meet the humanitarian needs of people in many lands, with particular emphasis on the most underprivileged children and families in developing countries. Rotary Club of Red Lodge focuses on four areas in the International Arena:
Worldwide Polio EradicationMany people believe that Polio has been eradicated from the world. That is not true. In 1985, there were 350,000 polio cases in 125 countries. Today, polio is prevelant in only four countries, the fewest in history: Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and Pakistan. PolioPlus, the most ambitious program in Rotary’s history, is the volunteer arm of the global partnership dedicated to eradicating polio. For more than 20 years, Rotary has led the private sector in the global effort to rid the world of this crippling disease. Since PolioPlus began in 1985, Rotary’s vast network of 1.2 million members has contributed money, volunteer time, and networking expertise to the polio eradication effort. Today, PolioPlus and its role in the initiative is recognized worldwide as a model of public-private cooperation in pursuit of a humanitarian goal.
In January 2009, Bill Gates spoke to Rotarians about joining Rotary International to help end polio worldwide. Here is his speech.
Rotary Club of Red Lodge is commited to three years of focused fundraising efforts to contribute to the Rotary Foundation PolioPlus goal of $200 million. All across the world, Rotarians want to END POLIO NOW.
Group Study ExchangeThe Rotary Foundation’s Group Study Exchange (GSE) program is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for businesspeople and professionals between the ages of 25 and 40 who are in the early stages of their careers. Rotary International District 5390 (Montana) partners with other districts for annual Group Study Exchanges. In recent years the groups traveled to Africa and South America. For more information about the program please visit Rotary International GSE program website. For information about joining a specific trip, please see the District 5390 GSE website.
Wheelchair FoundationThe Wheelchair Foundation is a nonprofit organization leading an international effort to create awareness of the needs and abilities of people with physical disabilities, to promote the joy of giving, create global friendships, and to deliver a wheelchair to every child, teen and adult in the world who needs one, but cannot afford one. For these people, the Wheelchair Foundation delivers Hope, Mobility and Independence. Rotary Club of Red Lodge previously partnered with the Cody, WY Rotary Club to ship a container of wheelchairs to Guatemala. Rotary Club of Red Lodge stands ready to help out in this arena as opportunities become available.
